The Somali Society of Dermatology (SSD) was established to provide a united platform for dermatologists and skin health professionals in Somalia. Its primary goal has been to improve dermatological care, foster research, and raise awareness about skin health across the nation. Over the years, SSD has gradually developed into a professional body with significant impact in both the healthcare and academic sectors.
In its early years, SSD concentrated on professional networking and knowledge exchange, ensuring that dermatologists across Somalia could collaborate effectively. This stage created the foundation for sharing best practices and identifying the most urgent dermatological challenges in the country.
As the organization expanded, it launched several public health campaigns to promote awareness about preventable skin diseases, hygiene practices, and skin cancer screening. These initiatives directly impacted local communities by reducing stigma around skin conditions and encouraging early treatment.
In the field of medical education, SSD has been active in organizing workshops, continuous medical education (CME) sessions, and training programs for young doctors and medical students. By doing so, the society has strengthened the next generation of dermatologists and ensured that Somalia has a growing pool of qualified specialists.
SSD has also made progress in research and innovation. Members of the society are increasingly contributing to dermatological studies, exploring local health challenges, and publishing findings that highlight Somalia’s unique dermatological context. This work has positioned SSD as a bridge between local practice and global dermatology research.
Despite its progress, the society continues to face challenges such as limited resources, shortage of advanced equipment, and restricted access to training in rural areas. However, SSD is actively working with both national institutions and international partners to overcome these barriers.
Looking forward, SSD is committed to establishing a Dermatology Training and Research Center, creating a national skin disease registry, and hosting annual international dermatology conferences. These initiatives will strengthen the society’s role in shaping the future of dermatology in Somalia and ensuring access to quality skin healthcare for all.
